While threemas "3colored-dot" mechanic was fun at the beginning, I can observe within myself that if I want to communicate with somebody I don't care that much if he or she is fully verified. Threemas unique selling point would be the possibility to use it without a phone number, but in my opinion this can be hindering "for the masses", as a lot of people I know simply like to exchange one phone number and have no interest in juggling with additional IDs. Also, the app cost of threema is a potential blocker for others willing to switch away from WhatsApp. While WhatsApp web normally works for me, threema Web suffers a lot from connection errors and is, in my humble opinion, just not usable.Īdditionaly signal is open source, while most parts of threema are closed source. It is a real client, while threema has a WhatsApp style web client which connects to your mobile device. I use both regularly, but if I had to choose it would be signal, mostly for it's desktop client.
